Watercolour Paintings of BC West Coast Scenes

        Breakfast at
               Shinglebolt Bay Cafe

I don't have to go far (although I can and do) to see a new and wonderful view of ocean, islands and sky - I can just sit on my front deck or take a run down the pass in my speedboat, SeaRose
On this early morning run in Cramer Pass, I was caught by the luminous backlighting of the eagle with a fresh-caught salmon just landing on the rock at the entrance to Shinglebolt Bay. An unusual visitor to our area, a sea otter lay below in the kelp, munching on a sea urchin. How lucky was I!
This was a not a quick painting as I chose a large canvas and a detailed format to capture all the luscious colour and light of the moment. The original found a home very quickly and several others inquired about a print. I no longer do giclee reproductions on canvas as  the surface is very vulnerable and scars easily so I decided to try it on rag watercolour paper. Art Ink Prints in Victoria did the proof and the beautiful print and it proved popular to studio visitors this summer.

                        Pacific Coast Tidepool

A central image of the tidepool surrounded by scallop, frilled dogwinkle, moon snail, and other shells, and even a teredo tube eroded out of the log within which the creature once lived show and celebrate only a tiny portion of the vast variety of sea life within and around the Pacific Coast tide pool.

                     By Echo Bay Creek

This beautiful woodland creek once hosted a small run of pink salmon, provided water for a grand village of indigenous people for thousands of years, was the site where schoolchildren floated wooden boats and imagined scenes of marine disaster. It was the path along the creek that thousands of visitors trod from the now demolished Echo Bay dock to Billy's Museum.
Many know and remember its tranquility and the sense of peace they come away with.

Low Tide at the Burdwood Beach

Moments of bliss while engaged in painting are forever and indelibly embedded in my mind, as well as appearing on a piece of watercolour paper. Playing with colour and light as the tide falls while I paint on location at the Burdwood Beach near my home, the luminousity of the colours inspired the way I used the water, pigment and brush to express my joy in the moment.

                           Treasures of Spring

Since I was a young painter I've loved to paint the daffodils of spring. Yellow and blue, with a sprinkle of pink seems the perfect colour combination as the daffs and the flowering current sparkle in the greens. Favourite things...an antique perfume bottle found on the Burdwood Beach, moon snail shells, a bear claw and my treasured string of trade beads all symbolize aspects of my life story.

These two big bulls are not members of the same pod, the one on the right "Rainy", TO11A is an orphan and was with "Rocky" TOO2C1 for a while. The original is sold, however so many were interested in this painting I asked Art Ink Print in Victoria to create a beautiful print.

                        Hidden Shell Beach
Another of the sweet coastal secrets are the numerous white shell beaches signifying a homeplace or food-gathering site on one of the many small islets scattered throughout the Broughton Archipelago. Often these places are tranquil, rich with edible seafood and plants.

                     Grizzly Bear Picnic

Since discovering the remains of a gull in a pile of grizzly scats, I've carried in my mind a painting of a family of these bears, surrounded by a border depicting some of the great variety of food items upon which they survive- from black bears to the tiny rice like bulbs of the rice root lily.
