New Painting of the volunteer cabin, bird blind and wildflowers at Mitlenatch Island. May 2024, I had the great good fortune at long last to make a trip to Mitlenatch Island. On a moist overcast day my husband and I motored there with friends, Chris and Claire from Vancouver Island. We were prepared for an all day excursion with cameras, rain gear and a well-stocked lunch cooler.
What a wonderful day on a special Island! It lies a bit south of Quadra Island, in the rain shadow of Vancouver Island. The tides from the south and north end of Vancouver Island meet. The island is a BC Provincial Park, a nature conservancy and International Bird Sanctuary; home to a multitude of bird, sea life and wildflowers, most of them different from the wildflowers of my home territory in the Broughton Archipelago. Murder Rides is being read all over...
Dear friends and fans of the world of the Broughton Archipelago~ I know you are legion, as are those who enjoy a good book. I am astonished though by the number of people who manage to have a life and write a novel - the two seem often to be mutually exclusive. And many of those novels are good to great! If we've met, at my studio, or at Billy's Museum, or even if only digitally you may know I've been talking about my novel for years...too many years. In truth I wasn't just talking about my novel, I really was writing it, and now I've published and it can be found in many fine book stores on Vancouver Island, on Goodreads and Amazon, and of course is available from me.
Was it Really Murder?
Big crime comes to a town too small to merit even that title. Residents of the loose-knit coastal community, Echo Bay, are confronted with the same matters as the world at large; drugs, mental health, racial friction, sexism, you name it.But everyone signs on to the code; whether you like them or not, you always help someone in need.
When local prawn checker, Tim Connolly, doesn’t show up for a dinner date with his girlfriend Kit Sampson, no-one is too concerned. But when a body is found washed up on an islet by young boaters, the discovery fragments the community into a tumult of distrust and suspicion. And then the RCMP come calling.
Far from the structures created to monitor and regulate larger populations, these people are resourceful, tough and sometimes merciless. If something needs to be cleaned up, they clean it up. They gossip, embellish, draw conclusions and take action, sometimes disaster results, and sometimes a fitting outcome.
The glorious beauty of the Broughton Archipelago, with Echo Bay at the heart of the inlets and islands provides the background for these colourful characters who ‘rub along’—but can take justice into their own hands when one of their own breaks the social contract.

Please Note ~ I am sorry to share that this special book is currently out of print. But I love it when people send me drawings they have coloured and tell me what it meant to them. I am considering reprinting as SeaRose Publishing but due to the high cost of the heavier paper, would have to increase the price. Would you still buy it?
